Academic
and Co-curricular pursuits are given equal weightage
in our time table for our students. What is special
about these classes is that none of these are an
optional “extra” for our children. These activities
have been integrated into our weekly schedule and
are compulsory for all students. The classes are
conducted by experts and young professionals who
have distinguished themselves in their chosen
fields.
We have for our children :
Quizzing : With Mr
Barry O’Brien, a leading quiz master of
our country on our School’s Managing Committee,
quizzing is second nature to the students of Shaw
Public School. Inter-house quizzes, Audio-Visual
quizzes and also a much-awaited Teacher’s
quiz, keeps our staff and students alert and on
their toes.
Elocution : Inter-house elocution competitions
are held regularly where students recite selected
pieces from prose and poetry, guided and trained
by their teachers. Elocution is also a compulsory
activity on our time-table for all students for
we feel it goes a long way in improving diction
and building their confidence.
Vocal and
Instrumental Music
: Young Professionals and
experts conduct these classes at Shaw Public School.
We try to improve language skills and diction
through our Vocal music classes.
The Spanish guitar and keyboard are the two instruments
that are taught to our students from Classes V
– VIII and children await eagerly for their
classes every Monday.
Dance : Dance is an essential part of our curriculum
at Shaw Public School and we try to involve all
our children in various dance movements to build
fitness and stamina.
For students of Classes V – VIII creative
dance movement is used in therapeutic ways as
an alternative technique for healing, coping with
stress and building ‘confidence’.
A well known NGO ‘Sanved’ conducts
these classes every Monday and their trainers
are held in high esteem by our children.
Speech and
Drama : are also
compulsory activities to hone language skills for
all our students.
Theatre exercises, Voice training and Drama
workshops are conducted regularly by young
professionals and are part of our school
curriculum. Classes are held every Monday and our
children are unaware of the Monday morning blues!’
Chess
and Yoga : have been
introduced for our students of Classes I – IV. We
hope to generate fitness, a healthy life-style, an
awareness of our culture and traditions and also
build concentration and patience in our students –
for them to be able to cope with their fast paced
lives with no stress.
Educational
Trips and Excursions
: Visits to the Indian Museum, the Birla Institute
of Science and Technology, the Birla Planetarium
and other areas of interest in and around the city
make learning go beyond the class-room and are
encouraged in Shaw Public School. The school is
also a part of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme
and short treks are regularly organized for our
students as an essential part of this programme.
Programmes for
Social Awareness
: are very close to our heart here at Shaw Public
School. We want our children to care for the under
priviledged and those in need. Sensitivity towards
the environment is another area of focus. Regular
workshops, community service programmes and visits
to schools for pavement dwellers, old-age homes
and orphanages are an essential part of our time-table.
‘Sanved’, an organization that is
composed of women from marginalized sections of
society and works with mental health patients,
patients of HIV and AIDS, victims of violence
and trafficking and also main-stream children,
is a very important part of our teaching faculty
at Shaw Public School.
Exchange
Programmes with
schools abroad : Recently we have entered
into a partnership with British Council and a
school in the United Kingdom called the Oasis
Academy, in an effort to make our curricular and
extra curricular programmes travel beyond borders,
to make education a global process. We are working
towards setting up similar links with schools
all over the world so that our children may have
the opportunity to share experiences, techniques,
ideas and concerns and work on educational projects
with children across the world. We also hope that
in time, our children will travel to these countries
and visit their partner school in the near future.
With all this happening and more, Shaw Public
School is a happy place to be in.
